Reeling from tragedy and seeking atonement at the local homeless shelter, financial savant Paul Grace learns the true meaning of profit and loss -
but who will pay?
synopsis:
act one
During a rainy and gloomy Seattle winter, a very private PAUL GRACE finds himself volunteering in a homeless shelter
where he clearly doesn’t fit in. He is very uncomfortable with, but curious about, the regulars and staff. Away from the
shelter, Paul reclusively stays in his dark and dank office that is no longer operating. He has a home that is too steeped in
memories for him to sleep in it.
He meets a young girl from the shelter named
RACHEL, who will have a profound affect on him.
People from Paul’s past attempt to return him to his life of high finance and luxury while those at the shelter try to
understand why this man has entered their lives.
act two
ANNIE and Dr. STAN PENDLETON run the shelter. They become aware of who Paul is and tirelessly attempt to provide
him emotional help he doesn’t want. The various shelter characters reach into Paul’s life while his family and client’s pressure him back into the business of making the wealthy wealthier. The potential loss of the shelter’s lease makes Paul reluctantly dip back into his relationships, expertise and resources as an investment guru.
When BEN, one of the shelter regulars, is savagely beaten by gang members who prey on the neighborhood, Paul steps in
to take care of the old man and plots to avenge the attack. When Ben dies, Paul recruits OFFICER STALLINGS, a cop who he knows from the scene of his own tragedy, to the task of making the shelter safe.
Through exchanges with MARGIE (Paul’s sister) and JOHN (Paul’s Brother-in-law and business partner) it is learned that
Paul’s wife and daughter have died. Paul blames himself for both deaths and searches for redemption.
Paul wants to discretely help Rachel and her mom, BETH, as well as other regulars at the shelter. The distance between
his understanding of the homeless and his own upper crust life drives him to launch a plan to fix things in the only way he
knows how.
act three
Eyewitness videos attained from Officer Stallings, reveal that Paul’s daughter, BAILEY has died as the result of a traffic
accident in front of her school when Paul was late in picking her up. His guilt finally drives him to act on his plans.
Paul is joined by his former assistant CARLA, to execute a Robin Hood-like scheme to secure the future of the shelter and its regulars by emptying the coffers of his wealthy clients.
As Paul delivers on his plan at the cost of his own life, it is revealed how his wife COURTNEY, has died. At Paul’s funeral, Carla approaches Annie and Stan to make them aware of his plan to have them execute on an elaborate and well-funded approach to combat the homeless crisis.
In the final scene Rachel and Beth are shown in the setting of their new life having been given a second chance by Paul’s
efforts.
